Oshun, the goddess of love, fertility, and rivers, was one of the Orishas sent by Olodumare to create the earth. However, the male Orishas dismissed her contributions, believing they could complete the task without her. Angered by their arrogance, Oshun withdrew her support, causing the earth to become barren and lifeless.
Realizing their mistake, the Orishas begged Oshun to return. She agreed, but only after they acknowledged her importance. To restore life to the earth, Oshun transformed into a river, flowing across the land and bringing water, fertility, and abundance. Her sacrifice and nurturing spirit are celebrated in Yoruba culture, where rivers are seen as sacred and life-giving.
